The Beauty in Being by Yourself

I. CAN'T. BREATHE. For the past week or so I've had either a cold or dramatic allergies. I'm convinced it's allergies because I don't feel all slow and gross like when I have a cold, so I suppose I may never know. Either way, I've become a mouth breather which causes eating to be more like a work out and I'm hoarding tissues in pockets, purses, and there's even a small tissue mountain forming on the floor next to my bed. Sorry, I know that's disgusting and you probably didn't want to know that. ANYWAYS, just thought I'd catch you up a bit on the happenings of my life.

And now, while I attempt to keep myself from falling asleep because my allergy medication makes me sleepy, I'm going to tell you about the importance of spending time in the sweet company of yourself.

Keep in mind that I'm an introvert, so spending time alone is how I re-energize. However, even if you're an extrovert, I still believe you can benefit from this. Finding good company in yourself is a huge step towards feeling positively about yourself and your life, which I believe all of us could use a bit more of.

Quite a while ago I walked to my local coffee shop and sat outside alone. While my past self would have been worried that I looked lonely and sad, my present self was calm and loving the serenity brought by my solitude. I was able to take in my surroundings and notice the birds and the man sitting two table away reading the newspaper. Also, I could get lost in my thoughts and not have to pay attention to anyone but myself.

I don't know if finding good company in one's self is difficult to find or if it's easily achievable. Ever since I was little and playing Poly Pockets alone in my room (because my sister didn't want to play with me at the moment) I've been fine doing things by myself and I'm proud to say that I can. It's difficult for my to explain exactly how it feels for me and this is my very poor attempt at trying to do so, but I suppose if you are eager to know what I'm talking about you should try it yourself.

There's a bad stigma that goes with doing things alone. Such as, when you see someone at the movie theater alone, you're first reaction is to feel sorry for them. But why? They're there to see a movie and it's not like you're socializing much when you go with friends. (And if you're one of those people who does socialize a lot during the movie, I will find you and I will hurt you because there's nothing worse than people talking during a movie.) I actually would like to go see a movie by myself sometime. I think it'd be nice to just sit and enjoy my popcorn and be completely focused on the movie.

Then there's eating alone at restaurants. And I don't mean eating alone and scrolling through your phone. (because thanks to technology, we never really are alone, are we?) Most of us would probably see someone eating alone and pity them. We might even wonder if they've been stood up on a date. However, they're probably really enjoying themselves. They've immersed themselves in their food and their thoughts and I think that sounds great. And that's not just because I love food. Nowadays, people are always on the run and eating has become a necessity rather than something to enjoy. I don't know about you, but I want to start enjoying my food more.

Alright, well there's quite a bit of writing here, but I feel like I've accomplished hardly anything. I apologize if this is just a bunch of rambling, but just try finding good company in yourself. I promise it's a nice way to treat yourself. (treat yo self)

Until next time,
Sarahxoxo
