The Promise of Tomorrow
This evening there's a slight cool breeze outside and the leaves of the trees are damp with the remnants of the storm that passed through earlier today. The smell of wet gravel fills the air and for some reason I'm reminded of fall. Perhaps I'm just eager for a change in weather or maybe I'm just really excited for fall fashion, (I think we both know it's the latter.) either way, as most minds work, one thing led to another and I began to think about why I love new years so much.
I actually find it a bit peculiar that I love that holiday so much. If I'm completely honest, most of the time it's no different than any other cold, winter day, except that I spend an exceeding amount of time in front of the television to watch times square. So, I suppose it isn't the actual day that I adore, more so the idea of it. That meaning, I find it's promise of new beginnings, opportunities, experiences, and adventures intriguing. After all, it's New Years! There's a whole 365 days ahead of you! Anything could happen! So much can change!
However, I sit here this brisk summer evening I've realized something. All of those things I just mentioned above about how promising New Years can be, can apply to any other ordinary day. We never quite know what could happen or what opportunities could arise. And in terms of adventure? Create one yourself today!
I think we get so used to each day coming and going and being stuck in that same rut, that we forget how much a single day can impact our lives. When I think about it, it doesn't take an entire year for my life to change, most of the time it takes merely a day or two. So, why wait for December 31 to have faith in tomorrow? Without a calendar, December 31 would be no different than August 31. (except for the weather, of course.)
Having enthusiasm is something I believe in greatly. Being enthusiastic about as much as you possibly can, I guess just being enthusiastic about life will make your life so much more interesting. And most importantly, I believe that it will make you happier. We treat things as if they're mediocre, when in reality there is nothing promising us a tomorrow. We've just grown to expect it, until one day it just doesn't come.
So, don't wait to come up with a new New Years resolution. (even though we don't normally keep them.) Decide that tomorrow is a new start; a new day and therefore you'll create a new healthy habit or whatever your resolution happens to be. Just make a decision to start tomorrow and do it!
I'll always find New Years thrilling and I'll always love it. But I think it's time I start getting excited for tomorrow and all the new possibilities it may bring. Because you never know what could happen and how tomorrow may impact your life.
